Frequently Asked Questions

When should I hire a doula?

It’s never too early, or too late! Many families hire a doula in the second trimester, but parents also reach out just weeks before birth. If you’re considering it, let’s connect and see if we’re a good fit!

Could I really benefit from a doula if I have a supportive partner?

Absolutely! A supportive partner is an incredible asset during birth, but a doula serves a different yet complementary role.

  • A Doula supports both you & your partner

Your partner may deeply care for you but might not know how to provide hands-on support during labor. As your doula I can offer your partner guidance and also offer this myself.

  • A Doula brings experience & expertise

Your partner loves you, but they may not be familiar with the stages of labor or how to advocate for your wishes in a medical setting

  •  A Doula helps keep the atmosphere calm & focused

  •  Your partner’s love + A Doula’s support = THE BEST TEAM

Your partner knows you emotionally better than anyone, while a doula understands birth deeply. Together, they make a powerful team to support you physically, emotionally, and spiritually throughout your journey.

Bottom Line: If you have a supportive partner, a doula doesn’t replace them! They enhance the experience for both of you!

What if I get an epidural?

A doula supports all types of births, including medicated births. I can help you stay comfortable while you wait for the epidural, assist with positioning after it's placed, and help ensure your birth plan is still honored.

Can I have a doula if I have a C-section?

Yes! Whether planned or unexpected, I can support you before, during, and after a C-section birth by:

Helping you prepare emotionally and physically.

Being with you in the operating room (when permitted).

Providing postpartum support to help with healing and newborn care.

What if I don't know what kind of support I need?

That’s okay! Every birth and postpartum experience is unique. Let’s chat, and I can help you figure out what support would be most helpful for you and your family.

What are the benefits of hiring a doula?

Hiring a doula is a very personal choice, however there are several studies that point directly to the great impact a doula can have on your birth regardless of home, birth center, hospital, medicated, unmedicated, vaginal or cesarean. Some of these include:

-Decreased Cesarean rate

-Increased likelihood of spontaneous labor

-Decrease in use of pain meds

-Shorter labor

-Decreased risk of low apgar at 5 minutes

-Decrease in dissatisfaction with the experience

What is the difference between a doula and a midwife?

This is one of the most common questions I get, so let's go through it!

  • A midwife is a trained medical professional responsible for the clinical aspects of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. They monitor your health, your baby’s wellbeing, perform exams, attend your birth to oversee safety, and can catch your baby. Midwives are a wonderful option for families looking for personalized, low-intervention medical care—but they may not always be present throughout your entire labor. Their primary focus is medical safety.

  • A doula is not a medical provider. Instead, a doula offers emotional, physical, informational, and spiritual support throughout your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum journey. Additionally, doulas offer partner support and help you advocate for yourself, which is a lifelong tool to carry with you! Think of a doula as your personal guide, coach, and constant grounding presence, someone who’s there for the tears, the triumphs, the questions, the unexpected moments, and everything in between.

Where midwives focus on the health of your body, doulas also focus on the health of your heart and mind.

Birth is so much more than just a physical event. It is emotional, mental, and deeply spiritual as well. It’s a life changing experience that deserves whole-person support.

As your doula, I stay by your side continuously, offering comfort measures, encouragement for you and your partner, faith-based presence, advocacy tools, and practical guidance so you feel seen, heard, and supported at every step.

Together, midwives and doulas make an amazing team, but we serve in different and both very important roles. You don’t have to choose one or the other... YOU CAN HAVE BOTH!!!
